No seu novo álbum, “Recovery”, que será lançado na segunda-feira, você assume um tom confessional e se afasta da misoginia e a violência demente que você fez em seus trabalhos antigos. Você concorda?
Eu acho que eu precisaria voltar e ouvir o CD. Eu fui?
O Slim Shady, seu ego alternativo na rima e na matança, ainda existem? Ou você se separou dele?
O Shady ainda existe. Mas eu não acho que os sujeitos nesse álbum requerem, você sabe, serras elétricas e machados e matar todo mundo nesse CD. Tinha tanta coisa assim no último álbum que eu senti que eu estava indo em direção ao chão. Eu acho que conscientemente eu tomei um rumo diferente com esse álbum.
Você se arrepende por ter escrito tantas músicas que se referem às mulheres como “putas” e “vadias” que existem unicamente para o seu prazer?
Qualquer coisa que eu já falei, eu certamente estava sentindo no momento. Mas eu acho que fiquei um pouco mais calmo. Minha visão no geral sobre as coisas está mais madura do que era antes.
Até sua mãe te processou por difamação. Ela continua em Detroit, onde ela te criou como mãe solteira?
Eu não tenho certeza, para ser honesto. Seria muito difícil reparar essa relação.
Você foi acusado de escrever letras contra gays no passado. Você gostaria de ver o casamento gay sendo aprovado em Michigan, onde você vive?
Eu acho que se duas pessoas se amam, então que mal tem? Eu acho que cada um deveria ter a chance de ser igualmente miserável, se eles quiserem.
O novo homem de 37 anos, é o você tolerante?
É o novo eu tolerante!
Comparado a outros rappers, você é muitas vezes elogiado pelos seus esquemas de rimas complexas. Você lê poesia?
Eu acho que nunca li poesia, nunca. Eu não sou muito inteligente com livros.
O que o título do seu álbum se refere? Do que você está se recuperando exatamente?
Vicodin, Valium e Ambien, e em direção ao fim, que causou minha overdose, methadone. Eu não sabia que era methadone. Eu pegava as pílulas de onde eu podia. Eu simplesmente estava tomando qualquer coisa que me davam.
Aonde que você freqüentou a reabilitação?
A primeira vez que eu fui, foi em Brighton, Michigan. A segunda vez eu não fui para reabilitação. Eu só fui para um hospital normal. Eu me detoxifiquei no hospital, e ai eu voltei para casa. Eu não podia voltar para a reabilitação. Eu me senti como o Bugs Bunny [Pernalonga] em reabilitação.
O que isso significa?
Quando o Bugs Bunny entra para a reabilitação, as pessoas vão olhar. As pessoas na reabilitação estavam roubando meus bonés e canetas e cadernos e pedindo autógrafos. Eu não conseguia me concentrar no meu problema.
A revista Billboard considerou você o artista que mais vendeu na última década. O que você faz com todo o seu dinheiro?
Guardo. Eu economizo muito dinheiro por não comprar drogas mais. Eu invisto. Eu sempre tentar ser esperto. Eu tento tratar todo o dinheiro que estou ganhando como se fosse a última vez que eu iria ganhar.
Você acha que o rap chegou ao pico na criatividade?
Não. O hip hop agora – tem alguns artistas que colocam o hip hop num estado bom. Tem muitas pessoas talentosas, e tem muitos jovens talentos surgindo, como B.o.B, Jay Electronica, Lupe Fiasco e Drake.
Por que você não planejou nenhum tipo de turnê grande para seu próximo álbum, a não ser os dois shows com o Jay-Z em setembro?
Fazer turnê é difícil para o corpo. Era um grande gatilho para mim quando estava bebendo e me drogando.
Como que você se mantém sóbrio?
Minhas crianças, e eu também vejo um consultor de reabilitação toda semana. Estou limpo há dois anos.

Sim. Minhas crianças – Eu as amo tanto, e elas tem me ajudado com tantas coisas.
Fico imaginando o que elas irão achar da sua nova música “W.T.P.”, que significa White Trash Party [Festa dos Lixos Brancos]. Você fala para os ouvintes, “Entrem na minha minivan, vamos nos acabar”.
Só estou voltando às minhas raízes de lixo branco.
